Billy Bragg is an English musician who has such a huge biography that’s almost impossible to summarise. Luckily his website is very comprehensive and has lots of links — so almost all information you need can be found there.
From from his early days in a punk band Billy Bragg was a songwriter. After Riff Raff (the punk band) ended, he joined a tank regiment in the British army, and found that he was writing more songs than ever, which prompted him to spend ‘the best £175 of his life’ buying his way out again. His music since then has reflected his passions at the time, from love to politics to parenthood.
Billy has a long-standing interest in English traditional music which has had a strong influence on his approach to writing lyrics. In particular, he cites English traditional band Waterson:Carthy as a major source of inspiration, and can often been seen performing with various members of that extended family.
Almost all of Billy’s work has a political edge to it, and he continues to be a keen student of the protest song tradition, both in folk music and pop/rock.
