Uilleann Pipes

The uilleann pipes are one of the most complex, mysterious, perverse and beautiful instruments ever created. While they are clearly a member of the bagpipe family, they have a mechanical complexity which is a far cry from other bagpipes, such as the more familiar Scottish highland pipes, or the gaida. The nature of the uilleann pipes has had a significant impact on Irish music.

One striking difference is that the uilleann pipes are not blown with the mouth. Air is pumped into the bag by means of a bellows attached to the elbow, while the pipers use their fingers, wrists, and even the right knee to operate the various holes and keys that determine the notes. They are also much quieter than most members of the bagpipe family, which makes them better suited for playing in groups, where many other bagpipes have a tendency to drown other instruments out.
